Opinion dynamics: inhomogeneous Boltzmann-type equations modelling opinion leadership and political segregation
نویسنده
چکیده
We propose and investigate different kinetic models for opinion formation, when the opinion formation process depends on an additional independent variable, e.g. a leadership or a spatial variable. More specifically, we consider: (i) opinion dynamics under the effect of opinion leadership, where each individual is characterised not only by its opinion, but also by another independent variable which quantifies leadership qualities; (ii) opinion dynamics modelling political segregation in the ‘The Big Sort’, a phenomenon that US citizens increasingly prefer to live in neighbourhoods with politically likeminded individuals. Based on microscopic opinion consensus dynamics such models lead to inhomogeneous Boltzmann-type equations for the opinion distribution. We derive macroscopic Fokker-Planck-type equations in a quasiinvariant opinion limit and present results of numerical experiments.

Modelling opinion formation by means of kinetic equations
In this chapter, we review some mechanisms of opinion dynamics that can be modelled by kinetic equations. Beside the sociological phenomenon of compromise, naturally linked to collisional operators of Boltzmann kind, many other aspects, already mentioned in the sociophysical literature or no, can enter in this framework. While describing some contributions appeared in the literature, we enlight...
متن کاملBoltzmann-type control of opinion consensus through leaders.
The study of formations and dynamics of opinions leading to the so-called opinion consensus is one of the most important areas in mathematical modelling of social sciences. Following the Boltzmann-type control approach recently introduced by the first two authors, we consider a group of opinion leaders who modify their strategy accordingly to an objective functional with the aim of achieving op...
متن کاملExplicating Opinion Leadership: Nonpolitical Dispositions, Information Consumption, and Civic Participation
What are the sources of opinion leadership? Do opinion leaders seek informational media, and if so, how do they consume it? Are opinion leaders active in civic life, or is it that those who are active think of themselves as opinion leaders? Is opinion leadership a cause or a consequence of political efficacy? To answer these questions, we use data from two large national surveys: a cross-sectio...
متن کاملCycles in public opinion and the dynamics of stable party systems
We study a dynamic model of elections where many parties may enter or exit political competition. At each election a new political leadership arrives for each party. The leadership cannot choose the party’s platform (ideological identities are fixed) but must decide whether or not to contest the election. Contesting elections is costly and this cost is higher if the party has recently been inac...
متن کاملHow, when and where can Spatial Segregation Induce Opinion Polarization? Two Competing Models
Increasing ethnic diversity fosters scholarly interest in how the spatial segregation of groups a ects opinion polarization in a society. Despite much empirical and theoretical research, there is little consensus in the literature on the causal link between the spatial segregation of two groups and the emergence of opinion polarization. We contribute to the debate by investigating theoretically...
